If you answered yes to either of these questions, then you are among the thousands of companies out there doing business in this market. And what you have to know is that if you don't currently have an e-commerce capability, then now is the time to consider Spec 2000.

Just what is Spec 2000?

Confusion sometimes arises because in practice the term "Spec 2000" means different things to different users. It's variably known as:

  • A set of e-business standards, published by the Air Transport Association of America (ATA)
  • The actual exchange of e-commerce messages between companies engaged as either buyers or sellers in MRO
  • A central database (aka, the ATA Aviation Marketplace) containing information related to the price and availability of spare parts

In a way, all of the above are correct. This is because Spec 2000 provides the file and message formats needed to produce standardized catalogues in digital format and to automate supply chain related business transactions. You can find these format definitions in Chapters 2, 3 and 4 of the Spec 2000 manual and in the associated Common Support Data Dictionary (CSDD).

So how does Spec 2000 facilitate e-commerce?

Spec 2000 file formats - known as "procurement data files" describe how to format catalogue data that is to be loaded onto the ATA Aviation Marketplace. Customers in need of spare parts will search the Marketplace to find sources of supply along with up-to-date price and lead time information.  Additionally, many customers will download the Marketplace data in bulk and use it to update their backend systems with current price and lead-time data. Basically, customers appreciate the convenience of a single source of procurement data - all in a common format.

Spec 2000 message formats cover the core supply chain activities of sourcing, ordering, logistics and invoicing. Buyers and sellers - or trading partners - can exchange electronic quotes, orders, shipment notices and invoices, all in a common format - just like procurement data

Together, these data files and messages provide an efficient and electronic means of conducting business across time zones. Because of its machine-to-machine nature, Spec 2000 is effective regardless of spoken language or backend systems.
