Every day, airlines load 100.000 kilos of newspapers and magazines aboard aircraft. That’s 150 million copies – with no certainties they’ll be read.

It’s a small but costly extra that’s an accepted part of the traveling price. It costs fuel. It costs to supply it, to clear it away, and to dispose of it. Languages are limited, of course, and so is choice.

So what’s the alternative?

Well, until recently there was none.

But SITA and our partner, Orange Business Services, have joined forces to produce Media Station, a smart solution able to exploit the fact that 70% of passengers carry tablets or smartphones.

Media Station is a self-service entertainment kiosk that delivers the same content digitally that an airline provides in paper. Smart Station kiosks can be placed in airport lounges and at departure gates for easy access. They can support the latest wireless technology so passengers can download high-def movies in seconds.

Media Station isn’t going to revolutionize the air transport industry. But it does provide the opportunity to trim costs and save operational time. And it provides passengers with a better service while enhancing the airline or airport’s ancillary revenues.

Learn more about Media Station in the latest issue of the Air Transport IT Review.
